Obituary of Gershon Taylor

Sts. Joseph & Michael church steeple collapsed onto the street below, after the embers from the fire in a nearby house hit the church.

With a pain we are reporting that Sts. Joseph & Michael Church in Union City, NJ was damaged by fire early this morning on March 04, 2017. Fr. Aro Nathan is a parish priest of the church and very helpful and always allowed us to us his church and hall to arrange a Gujarati Mass for our Gujarati Catholic Samaj of USA. Our prayers are with the church and community.

UNION CITY, New Jersey (WABC) —

A young boy was killed and his father was seriously hurt in a fire overnight Friday in New Jersey.

The six-alarm fire ripped through homes and a church in Union City, starting around 1 a.m.

It began at a home on Summit Avenue and the wind sent embers to a nearby church, Sts. Joseph and Michael Church at Central Avenue and 14th Street, and surrounding areas. The church has been standing for more than 100 years.

Consumed by flames, the church steeple collapsed onto the street below. Power lines also were down in the area.

The original fire started a block away at a two 3-story frame houses at Summit Avenue and 14th Street. The child who died was in one of the homes.

A look at the scene Saturday morning:
The fire was under control later Saturday morning, but firefighters remained on the scene to put out hot spots around 8 a.m.
Police are advising motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.

“God has a purpose in saving my life” said young and strong Ankit Gohil in his thank you note to family and friends.

March 03, 2017
Dear family and friends,
I had gotten into my accident on August 15th 2016, approximately 6:00 P.M. I happened to be riding my motorcycle, and a white pick up truck had taken a left into me. I was vigorously and violently tossed off my bike. My bike and I were laying on the grass, we were both tossed about 20-30 feet. My human instinct was to get up and try to understand what was going on, but I could not move. I couldn’t feel my left arm or left leg. Finally when I looked down at my body, I understood the severity of my injuries. My stomach was ripped open, left arm hanging on by a thread, ankle ripped apart, and femur fractured and popped out of the flesh.
Fully conscious, I was rushed to Cooper Trauma 1 Hospital. Besides a fractured hip, pelvis, femur, fibula, I had to get my left arm amputated – the same arm where I had the eternal promise of God imprinted. I was in a 8-hour long surgery, which was followed by series of surgeries thereafter. Through the six-week hospital stay it was hard for me to see the end of the road and see things get better. At the time of the accident I was a very outgoing and active 21 year old. For that to be taken away was very frustrating to cope with.
Throughout the next six months I dealt the cards of setbacks and other complications due to my traumatic accident. It was difficult. With all that said, I want to thank my friends and family. You have all shown me copious amounts of love and support. I truly appreciate how everyone made me feel just at home even though I was in the hospital. I appreciate all the sacrifices you all have made for me.
Thank you for all the prayers and thoughts. By God’s grace I was discharged from the rehabilitation hospital on February 28th, 2017, six-months and a half was a long time to be away from home. I still have a long battle but I praise God that I am alive. My favorite verse will remain embedded in my heart forever and I know that God has a purpose in saving my life. I humbly ask for your continue prayers for my life.
Ankit Gohil.
