Fr. Athanasius Rethna Swamy Swamiadian, is appointed the new Bishop for the Diocese of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Athanasius Rethna Swamy Swamiadian, the new Bishop for the Diocese of Ahmedabad, India. Currently Fr. Athanasius was serving as the Rector of Vianney Vihar, the Interdiocesan Major Seminary in Baroda.
Fr. Athanasius Rethna Swamy Swamiadian was born on 10 February 1961 at Parampukkarai, in Tamil Nadu’s Kottar Diocese. He did his priestly studies at St. Charles Major Seminary in Nagpur. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Ahmedabad on March 29, 1989. He holds a Licentiate in Clinical Psychology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
After his priestly ordination he held the following positions:
1989-1991: Parish Priest in Sanand,
1991-1993: Rector of St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Ahmedabad
1993-1994: Dean of St. Xavier’s High School, Chavdapura;
1994-1998: Student at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.
1998-2002: Rector of Shradha Interdiocesan Seminary, Ahmedabad;
2002-2012: Rector of St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary in Ahmedabad and spiritual director of Gujarat Vidya Deep Seminary, Baroda.
Since 2012, he has been serving as the Rector of the Interdiocesan Major Seminary Vianney Vihar, Baroda, teacher and Spiritual Director at Gujarat Vidya Deep, Baroda, and Spiritual Director at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Ahmedabad. Member of the Presbyteral Council and Consultor of the Diocese of Ahmedabad.
The Diocese of Ahmedabad was established on May 5, 1949 from the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Bombay. It has 42 parishes for 70,038 Catholics.

The Diocese of Ahmedabad organized a Blind Walk Rally on World Sight Day – October 13, 2017. Similar rally was organized in Nadiad too.

૧૦૦ અમદાવાદીઓએ આંખે પટ્ટી બાંધી સમાજને નવો રાહ ચીંધ્યો.

આજે world blind WALK ના પ્રસંગે મહાધર્માંધ્યક્ષ માન્યવર થોમસ મેકવાની આગેવાની હેઠળ શરૂ થયેલ પ્રોજેક્ટ વિઝન-૨૦૧૭ અંતર્ગત ગુજરાતમાં સૌપ્રથમવાર blind walk નું આયોજન કરાયું હતું.

નેત્ર દાન પ્રતિ જાગૃતિ ફેલાવવાના ઉમદા આશયે શરૂ કરાયેલ આ રેલીને સવારે ૧૦ કલાકે ગાંધીગ્રામ રેલવેસ્ટેશને થી જાણીતા ગુજરાતી ફિલ્મ ડિરેક્ટર શીતલ શાહે ઝંડી બતાવીને રવાના કરી હતી.

૧.૩ કિમી અંતરની મજલ કાપીને માઉન્ટ કર્મેલ સ્કૂલ પહોંચેલી આ રેલીમાં ઓક્સિજન ફિલ્મની સમગ્ર ટીમ તથા અમદાવાદના રેડીઓ મીરચીના રેડિયો જોકી દૃવિત પણ હાજર રહયા હતા.

આ પ્રસંગે સ્વામી આધ્યાત્મનંદ, મહાધર્માંધ્યક્ષ થોમસ મેકવાન,સિસ્ટર લુસી,ફિલ્મી હસ્તી શીતલ શાહ તથા ભક્તિ કુમાવતે પ્રાસંગિક પ્રવચનો કર્યા હતા. શીતલ શાહ તથા ભક્તિ કુમાવત સેન્ટ ઝેવિયર્સ તથા માઉન્ટ કાર્મેલમાં ભણ્યા હોવાથી પોતાના જીવનના પ્રસંગોને વાગોળ્યા હતા.

સેંટ ઝેવિયર્સ મિર્ઝાપુરના આચાર્ય તથા આજની રેલીના સર્વેસર્વા ફાધર ટાઇટ્સ દ્વારા નેત્ર દાન બાબતે ઉપસ્થિત મેદનીને પ્રતિજ્ઞા લેવડાવી હતી.

અંતે દુનિયામાં 100 વાર થી વધુ વખત રક્તદાન કરી ચૂકેલા ૧૦૨ જેટલા સેનચુરિયન રક્તદાતા ધારવવાનો વિશ્વ વિક્રમ જેને નામે છે તેવા અમદાવાદીઓએ પ્રસ્તુત રેલી પર સફળતાની મહોર મારી હતી.

His Holiness Pope Francis conferred sainthood on two Indians on Sunday, November 23, 2014.

Pope Francis read the canonization formula, proclaim the new saints:

Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the Indian founder of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, a Syro-Malabar Catholic order. Born in 1805, he died in 1871.

Euphrasia Eluvathingal, a member of the Carmelites founded by St. Chavara. She lived 1877-1952.

Fr. Susai Manickam passed away at the age of 45.

It is too sad to report that the founding parish priest of St. Joseph’s Church, Tarapur, Gujarat, Fr. Surai Manickam passed away today. He was only 45 years of age and was on his visit to a nearby village when he had a cardiac arrest. His parish was adopted by St. David’s parish in Maple, Canada as a sister-parish. Hon. Bishop Thomas Macwan of Ahmedabad Diocese has just attended the annual fund raising event organized by St. David’s Parish, Maple, Canada on March 01, 2014.

 

May God rest him in peace.
